Democracy at Work

Whole School Meetings

Twice a week the whole school meets to discuss issues of concern to the children. The children set the agenda, and thereby have their issues heard and addressed by their peers. Every child is encouraged to participate, and resolutions occur when options and opinions have been explored. In this way the children have a direct voice in resolving their own issues and even changing school policy. For example, as a result of one meeting, the school altered its ban on chocolate to allow for chocolate milk and chocolate chips. Students have also initiated changes to guidelines for playground behaviour as a result of their discussions.

Student Council

Halifax Independent School has a very active student council that provides leadership in the organization of extracurricular and fundraising activities. Representatives from each class from Middles up meet every two weeks and work together on various projects such as raising the funds required to purchase a tetherball for the schoolyard. Some of the most popular fundraising events are the regular dances and the Spring Fling booths, organized entirely by the Student Council.

Peer Helpers

Halifax Independent School is proud of its core group of Peer Helpers who have been trained to help resolve conflict within their peer group and on the playground. These children, ranging in age from eight to fourteen, are learning valuable mediation skills as well as contributing to a more peaceful atmosphere within the school.

Peaceful Schools International

Halifax Independent School is a member of Peaceful Schools International, an organization whose mission is “to lend support and recognition to schools that have made a decision to create a culture of peace.”
