Mini Society

Just when school could be winding down for the summer, Halifax Independent School turns all of that energy into an exciting “whole school” project called Mini Society. For one week, the children spend two hours each morning participating in their mini-society. They go to work in a craft shop, snack bar or newsroom. They get paid in a currency that they have invented and printed themselves. They make individual decisions about how much of their earnings to spend on a snack or a newspaper and how much to save in the “bank” (which has an excellent rate of interest!). On the last day, children are free to set up a store with goods purchased from the craft “warehouse” or to offer some service or homemade craft for sale to one another. The imagination and energy that the children pour into “market” day make it a school-wide celebration.
